Workability and the refractory lining are the two most important aspects of a furnace design.
Molten aluminum containment is not the only property of the ideal refractory lining, but it also has to withstand mechanical abuse and reduce the thermal losses at a minimum.

UPPER SIDE WALLS

With exposure to alkali, high temperature, and some mechanical abuse from cleaning/charging practice, materials in the upper wall should be of high refractoriness with good strength and resistance to alkali environments.

ROOF

ROOF lining is subjected to similar conditions to the upper wall, but with less mechanical damage.  Here the main threat is represented by high temperatures and a potential alkali environment.

In sidewalls, metal penetration concentrates at the metal line where molten aluminum and aluminum metal oxide, or alumina (which forms from a reaction between the furnace atmosphere and fluxes) react with the refractory, causing a severe problem.
Penetration at the metal line contributes to thermal spalling of the refractory and causes considerable damage when deposits that cling to the wall are removed during a cleaning operation.

JAMB AND LINTEL

• Mechanical damage
• Abusive cleaning
• Thermal shock

The surface at the proximity of the door opening is exposed to a great
deal of mechanical abuse from cleaning and charging, as well as thermal cycling conditions when the door
is opened or replaced during operation. Refractory lining in these applications must provide high strength and good resistance
to thermal shock conditions.

RAMP AND SILLS

• Abusive cleaning
• Dross removal
• Thermal shock

Refractory in the ramp and sill should possess high strength and superior abrasion resistance due to the harsh mechanical abuse and impact during charging and cleaning.

BURNER

SUB HEARTH

Refractory materials should provide good strengths. Typically
an economical, fireclay based or lightweight product. Nonwetting (to molten aluminum) versions are available and

DOOR
